Two powerful earthquakes within hours of early Monday morning, devastating cities and towns across a vast swath of southern Turkey and northwestern Syria, quickly became one of the worst disasters of this century, with the death toll already exceeding 20,000.

In addition, we will look at some of the biggest natural disasters of the XXI century:

Indian Ocean Tsunami

A magnitude 9.15 earthquake near the island of Sumatra on 26 December 2004 triggered a tsunami that swept across Indonesia, Thailand, India, Sri Lanka and many other countries in the region, killing at least 230,000 people, leaving 43,000 missing and devastating Indonesia villages and tourist islands.

The 2010 Haiti earthquake

A magnitude 7 earthquake on January 13, 2010 devastated Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince, killing an estimated 316,000 people. The United Nations estimates that 80,000 buildings in Port-au-Prince and surrounding areas have been destroyed.

Cyclone in Myanmar

Cyclone Nargis crossed the Irrawaddy Delta and southern Yangon, the former capital of Myanmar, on the evening of 2 May 2008 with winds of 240 km/h. About 140,000 people died and 2.4 million were seriously affected by the consequences.

Earthquake in China

A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck China's Sichuan Province on May 12, 2008, killing an estimated 87,600 people.

Earthquake in Pakistan

The 7.6-magnitude earthquake with its epicenter northeast of Islamabad on October 8, 2005 killed at least 73,000 people. The earthquake also affected the Indian region of Kashmir, where 1,244 people died.

Earthquake in Iran

An earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale struck southeastern Iran's Kerman province on December 26, 2003, flattening the city of Bam, killing 31,000 people.

Earthquake/tsunami in Japan

A magnitude 9 earthquake and tsunami struck northeastern Japan on March 11, 2011, killing an estimated 15,690 people. The earthquake also caused the worst nuclear disaster in the world since Chernobyl in 1986.

Earthquake in India

An earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale struck India's industrial hub, Gujarat, on January 26, 2001, killing at least 14,000 people and injuring more than 150,000.

Earthquake in Nepal

An earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale struck Nepal on April 25, 2015, killing nearly 9,000 people.

Earthquake/tsunami in Indonesia

An earthquake measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale struck the Indonesian island of Sulawesi on September 28, 2018, resulting in a 1.5 meter tsunami. More than 4,300 people died.

2021 Haiti earthquake

A magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck southern Haiti on August 14, 2021, killing more than 2,200 people and destroying or damaging about 13,000 homes.

Hurricane Katrina

Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans on August 29, 2005, overwhelming the flood walls, putting much of the city under 16 feet (4.57 m) of water. About 1,800 people died. Most of the victims were in the US state of Louisiana, but neighboring Mississippi was also hard hit.

A powerful earthquake has struck South-eastern Turkey, near the Syrian border, killing more than 20.000 people as they slept and trapping many others. The government declared a 4th-level alarm, meaning it is asking for international help.
Hatay, Gaziantep, Kahramanmaraş, Şanlıurfa, and Adana are the most damaged cities. Roma communities are one of the most vulnerable groups in the region. Some of the houses collapsed and most of them were damaged. Rain, snow, and cold brought by seasonal conditions make the situation even more difficult. Some neighbourhoods cannot be reached. People are anxious about aftershocks of earthquakes. Roma are working informal jobs, therefore; their insecurities have increased in this period. The vital needs for Roma are food, shelter, and heating. At night, the heat will decrease -4 and -7 Centigrade degrees and living conditions become so much worse. The government and civil society are getting organized; however, Roma do not be prioritized and ERGO Network's member organisation Sıfır Ayrımcılık Derneği - Zero Discrimination is trying to get organized for Roma neighbourhoods. We are listing the emergent needs and current situations of Roma and their families. 

Therefore, we are looking for help and support to reach and support Roma in Eastern Turkey. The urgent needs are:

7. Pocket warmer
8. Synthetic underwear (baby/child)
9. Female sanitary pad
10. Powerbank for phones
11. Diapers
