Nicolae Paun: We have 2.5 million people who are not registered in the territory of Romania

The President of the Pro-European Roma Party, Nicolae Paun, said during the show "From the life of the Roma" that 2.5 million people were not visited in the Population and Housing Census in 2020.

"We have 2 and a half million people who have not been visited on the territory of Romania and we do not know if they are men or women, where they live. We are no longer talking about ethnicity. We don't even know how many people we have in the diaspora, the embassies and consulates were not involved in this process," said Nicolae Paun.

"If we keep the percentage of 3.4% representativeness at the Romanian level, from the examined population, then let's keep the proportion for 2.5 million citizens who were not examined. And you get 630,000 Romanian citizens of Roma ethnicity, exactly as many as you had in 2011. And in the diaspora there are at least 60,000 Roma who have not obtained residency, who travel daily between the respective countries and Romania", said the president of APRPE

The University of Bucharest withdraws the title of Doctor Honoris Causa awarded to Marshal Ion Antonescu

Ion Antonescu was found guilty of war crimes, sentenced to death on May 17, 1946 by the People's Court in Bucharest.

The court that convicted Ion Antonescu was assimilated into the system of tribunals that tried the war crimes of the leaders of Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy, according to a University press release.

During his authoritarian rule, the marshal displayed a strong anti-Semitic attitude, a fact publicly stated on many occasions.

"As such, even if the number of Romanian Jews and those from the territories under Romanian administration killed during the Holocaust cannot be precisely determined, the conclusion of the International Commission for the Study of the Holocaust in Romania is that during that period in Romania and in the territories under his control between 280,000 and 380,000 Romanian and Ukrainian Jews were killed or died as a result of the repression. To them is added a large part of 25,000 ethnic Roma sent to Transnistria.

Delia Grigore, ethnologist from Romania: What future do the Roma have in Europe?

The EU and the World Bank launched several programs and initiatives aimed at improving the situation of the Roma. The final episode of the "Gypsy" series examines several possible future scenarios - some happy, some dark. Between 5 and 10% of Roma follow the custom of early marriage. Those from traditional communities attract the attention of Delia Grigore, an ethnologist. It is a socially important union between two families who decide to marry, for the primacy of the collective good - a rule in traditional societies - and, in fact, for a prolonged betrothal, very similar to the adoption of a small, young daughter-in-law, called terni bori. The alleged high crime rates among Roma are associated with relatively minor crimes. Most of the police officers interviewed noticed a huge amount of food theft. The police stopped publishing crime statistics by ethnic criteria after the anti-discrimination law was passed. Chief Commissioner Stefan Campean, of the General Police Inspectorate, states that the Roma crime rate was and is nothing special - despite the general perception to the contrary. The life expectancy of the Roma is 10-15 years lower than that of their fellow citizens from Eastern Europe, poverty - 10 times higher than that of the majority population in the region.

Serbia: Poverty strongly affects children living in Roma settlements, large families and rural households

UNICEF estimates say that the number of poor children has increased by almost 30,000 over the past year, and the most vulnerable are children living in large families, rural households and Roma settlements, writes Politika.

The absolute poverty rate in Serbia in 2021 was 8.9 percent, which means that almost every tenth person in Serbia could not meet the basic subsistence needs of food and clothing, and estimates say that this rate has increased in the past year between 0 , 3 and 2.5 percent.

- During every crisis, the poor become even poorer, and the rich become even richer - this was also shown by the crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine. Research that includes projections of poverty among the elderly shows that those living in rural and remote areas have the hardest time meeting their needs for food, hygiene products or medicine.

This means that every eighth person in Serbia cannot meet the basic existential needs for food and clothing, and people over 65 are in a particularly difficult situation.
