Amir Destanov is a street child, with one meal a day who won a prize in a math competition

Amir Destanov, a Roma child from the street who decided to fight the cruel fate that wanted his family to be below the poverty line, and he, his brothers, sister and mother to suffer domestic violence, won third place in the "Kangaroo" math competition .

He shared the joy with the Day Care Center for Street Children in Suto Orizari, which is currently supporting 61 children who managed to distract them from begging, enroll them in school and help them with further education and homework.

Extremely interested in mathematics, Amir achieved the upgrade to go to "Kangaroo" in the Center, solving tasks with teacher Philip. When he heard that there would be a competition, he wanted to participate as well, but he did not have 200 denars to pay.

"Others wanted to go, but because I am mathematically strong, I passed. The classmate told me, and I replied, "Okay, I'll talk to my family and tell you." "The payment for the 'Kangaroo' competition cost 200 denars, money I did not have," says Amir.

He immediately informed the teachers Irena Velkoska and Vasilka Jovanovska, who is a social worker, and Aleksandra Lozanovska, an educator, about his desire to compete in mathematics, in the category of eighth and ninth graders. They paid him a share from their own money.

At the match, Amir did not know how it went. He told the educators, the teachers from the Center that he was not sure what he had done, because he was pressing buttons, ie. was taken electronically. He wondered if he had done everything right, if he had coped or not with the click.

"But when he came with the diploma in his hand to win third place, we were so happy!", Says Irena Velkoska, coordinator of the Day Care Center for Street Children.

May 16th 1944 – the day of Sinti, Romani and Roma resistance

Today is the anniversary of that evening in 1944, when over 6000 Roma and Sinti stood up to the Nazi SS in Auschwitz-Birkenau and delayed the liquidation of the ‘Gypsy camp’ (zigeunlager) by fighting off the soldiers sent to take them to the gas chambers.

The concentration camp prisoners had received a tip off and so mobilized and united together, making crude weapons from whatever they could.  In fact Roma often  resisted the Nazis by  fighting back in whatever small ways they could, sometimes by singing and many gave their lives believing it was better to die free than live as slaves to the Nazi regime . This should make us proud and give us hope and those are the sentiments that this anniversary will bring forth. Sorrow, pride and resistance in the face of adversity, and hope for a better future.

Annually there is a very moving service organised by The Gypsy Council in Hyde park to remember the night of August 2nd 1944, when the Nazi SS returned to the zigeunlager and succeeded in murdering the remaining 3,000 inhabitants of Auschwitz-Birkenau, but this is not official, nor is it attended or acknowledged by any Government representatives.
