(Re)claiming the right to Roma self-determination

Guest post by Sebijan Fejzula, a militant with Kale Amenge (Roma for Ourselves), a Roma anti-racist organisation, and a researcher at the Center for Social Studies, University of Coimbra, Portugal. Sebi participated in Systemic Justice’s roundtable on Access to Justice

As a Romani woman, being the narrator of our own history, struggles and experiences has always been and remains a challenging task: to be able to break with the hegemonic understanding about us, the Roma people and “our issues”, precisely because we have been framed, constructed and defined by white supremacy for five centuries. From ‘The Gypsy’ to ‘El Gitano’, historical white constructed and imposed identities mainly by white academics have defined “what does it mean to be a Roma. Other “experts on Roma” have designed the Roma agenda based on their own priorities, centring on cultural instead of political issues at the heart of our struggle.

The policeman who beat a Roma in Bitola was sentenced to one year in prison

The police officer from Bitola who participated in the beating of Roma citizens in Bitola two years ago was sentenced to one year in prison, according to the Macedonian Young Lawyers Association. The Skopje Criminal Court found the police officer guilty in the repeated procedure, after the Court of Appeals overturned the verdict and returned the case for retrial.

It is about the event that happened in September 2020, when the police, as seen in the video published at the time, used excessive force on a group of Roma, after the son of the beaten Nevzat Jasharovski, driving a car, hit a pole.

The Association of Young Lawyers says that the verdict is of great importance, because it is among the first first instance verdicts where an effective prison sentence is imposed on a police officer for the use of excessive force.

Protest marches were held by the Roma from Bitola, against the police violence, but also colleagues and citizens from the city protested in support of the police officer.

Belgian city relocates immigrant Romani families from slums to residential sites on its outskirts

The Euronews television station reports that the Belgian city of Ghent is hoping to better integrate immigrant Romani families by taking advantage of nonprofit organizations' aid and assistance. Ghent has now built special residential sites in its northern outskirts in an attempt to better integrate such families into Belgian society.

The bathrooms and kitchens in the units are communally shared by more than one family living there. A representative of the Ghent County Council, Hannes Schotte, told Euronews that the city's inhabitants have said they will no longer tolerate the hosting of immigrant Romani people in the city's slums because the conditions there are inhumane.

"The people who lived in the slums before are here [on the outskirts] now," Schotte said. "The city is not tolerating anymore that more slums are built."

"That's very clear for the city that they don't want this because it is inhumane," the county politician said. "They don’t want this situation anymore."

Euronews interviewed the family of Mario and Roxana, Romani people living on one of the new residential sites. Their children now have access to the integration opportunities provided by cooking classes, the local schools, and playgroups.

"This is a good thing for me and my family," Mario said. "I came here to work, to be stable and to go forward."

And as Ukrainian refugees, Roma suffer from segregation

Since the start of the war in Ukraine almost a hundred days ago, more than 6.8 million people have fled the war-torn country. Of the 43 million people in Ukraine, according to Human Rights Watch, an estimated 400,000 belong to the Roma population. When the war broke out on February 24, everyone was in the same danger, but according to international organizations, not in the same treatment.

As Human Rights Watch recently warned, Moldovan institutions target most Roma refugees separately from other people fleeing the war in Ukraine.

The ERRC, a Roma-led organization working to combat anti-Roma racism, human rights abuses through Roma trials, research and advocacy, has also noted cases of segregation and poor living conditions in Moldova by Roma refugees from Ukraine.

"Moldova is the most obvious example of discrimination against public authorities that we have seen," Lee said.
