Amendments to the laws on residence and residence and on identity cards, which deal with statelessness in Macedonia, have been adopted in the Parliament.
The novelties foreseen by the Law on the registration of the residence and residence of citizens and the Law on the identity card are of special importance for the citizens who are affected by these problems, and for which the Political System Commission organized a supervisory hearing in February of this year, when conclusions were reached with which the Parliament has the supervisory role for the implementation of the Law on Civil Registry.
In this way, these unregistered persons – the so-called phantoms will now be able to exercise their basic human rights, making Macedonia the first in Europe and in the world to have decided on the status of statelessness.
The adopted interventions in the indicated laws are a guarantee that the situation with stateless persons will not be repeated in the country, because it has been systematically decided that every child born on the territory of Macedonia will be registered in accordance with Article 4a of the Law on Civil Registry.
