In Spain, the Roma, who are named "gitanos", have lived for more than five hundred years in a complex coexistence with other citizens who call them "payosi".
The first documents for the presence of Roma in Spain date back to 1425. Philip III, in recognition of the existence of Roma nomadic groups in 1619, stated: The death penalty mandated that all Roma should leave Spanish territory within six months and never return.
The Marquis of Ensende, otherwise Minister of the Interior to King Ferdinand
VI, in 1749, he ordered all Roma to be imprisoned.
At the same time, in the 19th century, Roma were included in the national imaginary Spain. Their culture, customs, aesthetics have been taken over by local cultural actors instrumentalized and folklorized by the cultural bourgeoisie, which sought to establish some sort of national, authentic and distinctly Spanish heritage.
And in the arts as well as in France, there was a continuous inspiration from the Roma. within society there has never been a genuine acceptance of Roma.
