The shortage of casket holders is poised to lead to burials in Germany, funerals warn. They say the gaps are being filled by retirees and students, but that this is not a permanent solution.
Earlier it was common for friends or relatives to take on the task, says Christian Hager, director of the North Rhine-Westphalia Funeral Home.
Older carriers, however, have their own problems, says Michael Wash of Dortmund's Webber company. People are much heavier today and, along with flowers and coffins, six carriers often have to lift 200 pounds.
In Germany, burial companies do not hire carriers because they are not paid financially, but also because of the increase in the number of creams. After cremation the urn to the grave is usually carried by a priest or family member.
