A large number of members of this community mostly live in Roma neighborhoods, five of which are in Nis: Belgrade neighborhood, Stochni trg, Yevrejsko gravelje, Crvena zvezda, Bulevar 12. Februari.
The Roma community in Nis faces many problems:
-employment (about 90% of the Roma population is unemployed),
-housing (no Roma settlement has a detailed regulation plan),
- education (segregated elementary schools, preschool education of Roma children, statistics showed that out of the total number of children in preschool institutions, Roma make up only five to seven percent),
- Social problems,
- health care…
The question arises - what do the councilors from the Roma community who are in the city and municipal parliaments do to solve these problems? Through an interview with some of them, we can conclude that in fact they do almost nothing, because as they say, some of them are on the lists of the ruling party on their own merit, and not as members of the Roma community. Is there perhaps an answer to the question why nothing changes in terms of solving the problems of the Roma community? Why only the non-governmental sector initiates the adoption of LAP, the development of detailed regulation plans in Roma settlements, as well as many other important issues. Therefore, a greater number of representatives of the Roma community in local parliaments have never brought changes or improvements in this community.
