Do you remember that story from a one year ago about the German pensioner where the German authorities found a tank in the basement? Now the story has a (judicial) epilogue... A German court convicted an 84-year-old pensioner... for illegal possession of a weapon, since in his a real arsenal was found in the basement, including a Nazi "Panther" tank and an anti-aircraft gun.
The court in Kiel decided to punish the former German with a suspended sentence of 14 months in prison and he was ordered to pay a fine of 250,000 euros, DPA reported.
In addition, he was ordered to sell or donate the 40-ton tank and anti-aircraft gun to a museum or collector within the next two years.
The convicted German claimed in court that he bought the "Panther" in England, insisting that it was a non-functioning tank, but according to German law it is illegal to possess tanks, weapons and ammunition that could be considered war tools without special permits.
Local authorities in the northern German city of Heikendorf discovered the illegal arsenal during a search of the basement of the 84-year-old pensioner's home in 2015.
The search was carried out as part of a wider investigation into the trade in Nazi-era art, and in a separate raid, two bronze horse statues were discovered that stood outside Adolf Hitler's office.
